About the Platform

U.S. and Bulgarian partners have united to assist people displaced from Ukraine. The United With Ukraine portal serves to support displaced persons already in Bulgaria or planning to come to Bulgaria in areas such as housing, childcare, employment, and continuing studies for students, among others. Here you will find information about our ongoing initiatives and all necessary contact information. We will continue updating the portal and doing what we can to contribute to the overall efforts taking place in Bulgaria.

The U.S. Embassy in Sofia and the America for Bulgaria Foundation (ABF) are coordinating efforts with our partners, the American Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria (AmCham), Nu Boyana Film Studios, the American University in Bulgaria (AUBG), the American College of Sofia (ACS), Muzeiko and other organizations, to assist displaced persons. We stand with the people of Ukraine and believe in the power of Bulgaria’s strong spirit of community and solidarity in this time when our democratic societies are under attack.

Assistance for
Displaced Persons from Ukraine

AUBG is actively supporting its current Ukrainian students and has taken aggressive steps to ensure their well-being and ability to continue their studies. The university’s doors are open for any displaced Ukrainian university students who are able to continue their studies in English, seeking or having found refuge in Bulgaria due to the war in Ukraine. AUBG also welcomes refugee scholars and professors within the extent of its institutional capacity. The university will provide placement and support for such scholars. AUBG can also provide English instruction through its English Language Institute in Blagoevgrad. In addition, current Ukrainian and Russian AUBG students are providing free translation services, cultural support and other support as need arises to displaced Ukrainians. AUBG student residence halls will also be available after May 22, for temporary accommodation of Ukrainian refugees in need.

AUBG stands ready to collaborate with other organizations and employers to support their efforts in these areas.

The American College of Sofia expresses its solidarity with the freedom-loving people of Ukraine. School-wide efforts have raised funds and material donations for refugee families in Bulgaria and for the Ukrainian Red Cross.

In addition to these efforts, ACS will help displaced Ukrainian students in need of high school education. Depending on availability, class placement will be created for refugee students with the necessary English language skills.

News

The first daycare center in Plovdiv for refugee children from Ukraine opened its doors today. The center was established by Ukrainian-born Plovdiv entrepreneur Nata Ellis and partners. With the support of the America for Bulgaria Foundation (ABF), Plovdiv Municipality, the local administration, businesses, donors, and volunteers, Ms. Ellis successfully launched the first of two daycare centers for Ukrainian children and their families, who fled the war, settling in Plovdiv. The centers will offer Bulgarian language instruction and preschool activities for the kids, along with support for the families in transitioning to life and work in Bulgaria.

ABF’s support for the two Plovdiv-based daycare centers comes on the heels of the successful launch in March of a temporary daycare center for Ukrainian kids in Sofia at the Foundation’s Muzeiko children’s museum. The initiatives are part of the United With Ukraine partners to support Bulgaria’s efforts to help those fleeing the war in Ukraine.

The second edition of the United With Ukraine job fair took place in Varna today. The event brought together for the second time refugees from Ukraine based in Varna with U.S. and Bulgarian businesses offering employment. This has been the fourth job fair since the launch of the United With Ukraine platform – with two prior events in Sofia and one in Varna. Hundreds of displaced persons from Ukraine came to seek support for employment, as well as assistance with settling in in Bulgaria. The American Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria, Nu Boyana, and other United With Ukraine partners stand ready to continue supporting Bulgaria’s efforts in helping those fleeing the war in Ukraine to find employment and the support they need in Bulgaria.

If you are a displaced person from Ukraine and you have decided to stay and work in Bulgaria, we welcome you at our United With Ukraine BG networking forum in Varna – Saturday, April 9th, 10:00-15:00, Palace of Culture and Sports, Hall 20, Varna.

At the event you can connect with employers, receive legal advice, get assistance to find accommodation, access to learning, help with building your professional CV, options for day care for children, mental health support, cultural orientation, etc.

The event is part of the United With Ukraine campaign https://fb.me/e/4DyyO8Crf, a joint initiative of the U.S. Embassy in Sofia, the America for Bulgaria Foundation, AmCham Bulgaria, Nu Boyana Film Studios, the American University in Bulgaria, the American College of Sofia, Muzeiko and other organizations, to assist displaced persons.
